Books 5-8

What are they about?
They are about Odysseus and how he got to leave Cylypso's island. He arrived at another island after traveling for 20 days. The king's daughter brought him to their palace and had a feast and played games.

Whose story do they tell?
Odysseus's story of finally getting off Cylypso's island.

What themes do they back up?
Loyalty, Hospitality, gratitude

Why are they important?
We learn Odysseus is still alive and wants to get home.

Summary of book III

Telemachos and Mentor arrive in Pylos where they meet Nestor the king. Nestor told stories about fighting beside Odysseus and how brave he was. Mentor and Telemachos ate, and after they were done they asked Nestor if he knew anything about Odysseus. He said he never heard about him after they split after the Trojan war. Nestor tells Telemachos to go and see Menelaus because he might know more about Odysseus. Mentor and Telemachos set off on horse to find Melaus.
